Statement of Commitment to GME

The David Geffen UCLA School of Medicine and the Medical Center are both committed to Graduate Medical Education as central to their missions to maintain a scholarly environment which is committed to excellence in education, medical care and biomedical research. UCLA seeks to educate outstanding physicians and medical scientists. Investing in graduate medical education and undergraduate medical education assures that current residents and future generations of health care professionals are prepared for California and the nation's evolving healthcare needs.

The School of Medicine and the Medical Center provide a supportive and challenging educational environment within which residents with diverse backgrounds can prepare themselves for careers characterized by commitment to excellence in patient care, research, teaching and lifelong learning. We offer residents state-of-the-art knowledge, demonstrate the latest developments in patient care, model compassionate and ethical care, and provide guidance and supervision to ensure patient health and safety.

The School of Medicine and Medical Center furnish an environment of organized GME programs in which residents develop personal, ethical, clinical and professional competence under careful guidance and supervision. Programs will assure the safe and appropriate care of patients and the progression of resident/physician responsibility consistent with each physician's clinical experience, knowledge and skill.

The Graduate Medical Education program is designed to provide residents with the knowledge, skills and values that can serve as the basis for competent and compassionate clinical practice, scholarly research and public service. Residents are encouraged to develop a process for self-evaluation and moral reflection to sustain a lifetime of responsible and committed practice of medicine. The educational program prepares residents to continue their own education and to teach their patients, colleagues and medical students throughout their working years. We are committed to ensuring that they understand the scientific foundation of medicine and apply that knowledge to clinical practice and extend that knowledge through scholarly activities. In addition, we provide the experience necessary for residents to master the clinical skills necessary to evaluate and care for their patients.

We offer opportunities for collaboration with colleagues throughout the School of Medicine and Basic Science departments. Such an environment offers a broad array of educational opportunities in GME. This includes great diversity in patient populations, specialty services, technology resources and educational programs.

While each residency program is designed to meet the unique requirements of the specialty, UCLA is responsible for ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all residents. The GMEC establishes educational policy, monitors residents' work conditions, reviews affiliation agreements, conducts internal reviews of each program, develops cross-residency educational programs and serves as an advocate for residents. The Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education directs the Graduate Medical Education Committee and together with the Office of Graduate Medical Education is responsible for ensuring compliance with ACGME Institutional and Program Requirements.
