Each department should develop a policy on residents participating in electives outside
the UCLA family or institutions with existing affiliations.
Residents may participate in outside electives if the following criteria are addressed:
- Elective must have educational value and be of superior educational quality.
Non-eligible electives include those requested solely for auditions, future fellowships,
and personal reasons such as location of family or friends.
- Elective must have Goals and Objectives that are written and meet RRC/ACGME Essentials.
- Resident participation must be evaluated using the Core ACGME competencies and Goals and Objectives for the rotation.
- A Letter of Agreement must exist with the receiving Program/Institution accepting responsibility for resident
training, supervision, evaluation and staying within ACGME and RRC guidelines on work duty.
- Malpractice should be assumed by the accepting institution, if possible.
- Salary and benefits need to be addressed. For short rotations that cannot be provided through UCLA's
affiliations, these should be continued to be paid by UCLA.
- Travel, lodging and other trip-related expenses are the responsibility of the resident unless part of the training program
and agreed to prior to the rotation.
- There must be a Program policy on how to apply for away rotations, amount of time away and make up of
core educational session (if applicable).
- 9. For international rotations, in addition to the above, the county to be visited MUST NOT have a U.S.
State Department "Travel Warning".
