Recruitment
To be eligible to be a UCLA house officer (resident or
fellow), applicants must fulfill the following selection
criteria:
- They must be a graduate of a medical school in
the United States or Canada accredited by the
Liaison Committee on Medical Education
(LCME) or:
A graduate of a college of osteopathic medicine in
the United States accredited by the American
Osteopathic Association (AOA).
- If a graduate of a medical school outside the
United States, they must have a valid certificate
from the ECFMG and have a Letter of
Evaluation from the Medical Board of California
indicating that they are eligible for resident
selection, or a valid California medical license.
If applicants do not have a valid California medical
license, all paperwork must be submitted
to the Graduate Medical Education Office for
approval prior to making any matches or other
commitments to the applicant.
- Programs that participate in the National Resident
Matching Program or sub-specialty match
must accept their first tier residents through the
match.
- Each program will have a selection committee
that will review the credentials of the applicant.
The basis for selection should be:
- the applicant’s academic credentials (dean’s
letters, program director letters, and faculty
letters)
- demonstration of success through personal statements and curriculum vitae
- assessment of appropriate abilities and
aptitudes as they pertain to the particular
specialty.
- good written communication skills
- good verbal communications skills (which
may best be assessed by an interview)
- No discrimination can occur based upon age,
race, sex, religion, ethnicity, national origin, sexual
orientation, disability or veteran status.
Candidates applying to programs with a pyramid
system shall be notified during the application
process that the program utilizes such a system.
Descriptions for such programs shall include written
notification that a pyramid system exists.
