LIABILITY INSURANCE - The University provides professional
liability insurance coverage to house officers for malpractice claims
arising out of the house officer’s acts or omissions within the scope
of their University duties. Exceptions to this coverage are acts or
omissions in the course of activities not within the scope of the
house officer’s duties, and acts or omissions resulting from actual
fraud, corruption, malice or criminal negligence. House staff
contacted by attorneys or others regarding malpractice suits are
asked to immediately notify the Medical Center Office of Risk
Management at 794-3500, who will advise on how to respond or
coordinate the response on their behalf.

Powell Library is among the 19 libraries on campus
LIBRARIES — The University Library at UCLA comprises a campuswide
network of libraries. Its principal components are the Charles
E. Young Research Library (which serves the needs of faculty and
graduate students in humanities and social sciences, plus the
Graduate School of Education & Information Studies and the School
of Public Policy & Social Research) and the College Library (which
is used by undergraduates), as well as several subject-specific
libraries. The total collections of the UCLA Library number more
than 8 million books and 78,000 magazines and academic journals.
In addition, the libraries hold collections of manuscripts, oral history
transcripts, archives, technical reports, government publications,
photographs, maps, audiovisual materials, corporate reports and
other scholarly resources. UCLA staff, faculty, and students have
access to all libraries in accordance with library regulations. To
borrow books or use services, use your UCLA BruinCard.
The Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library is located on the first floor
of the CHS, room 12-077. It is generally open Monday–Thursday
from 7:30 a.m.–11:00 p.m.; Friday 7:30 a.m.–9:00 p.m.; Saturday
from 9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.; and from 11:00 a.m.–11:00 p.m. on
Sunday. The Biomedical Library has an excellent reference
collection and a comprehensive historical section that gives special
emphasis to the fields of neuroscience, psychiatry, psychology,
ophthalmology, radiation biology, molecular biology, and vertebrate
zoology. The total collection includes over 643,095 volumes and
4,400 current journals including 3,500 electronic journals. The
UCLA Library Catalog contains information about most books,
audiovisuals, microcomputer programs, and all currently received
journal titles at all UCLA libraries. It also provides links to electronic
resources such as online journals and e-books. A customized
version of the National Library of Medicine’s PubMed database is
available from the Biomedical Library’s web site. PubMed@UCLA
will display links to electronic journals and to call numbers for print
versions of the journals to which the library subscribes. Personal
consultations and group seminars customized for individual
departments, labs, or research groups are also available. Call

MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM - A large group of qualified
therapists is available to provide ongoing low cost treatment to
UCLA medical students and house staff. The program offers initial
consultation with a psychologist at no cost. Strict confidentiality is
maintained; offices are located off campus and no records are kept
of any initial visit. For more information or for an appointment, call

310/794-3500. This department provides information and technical
assistance on risk management issues and related problems. They
should be notified immediately:
- if there is a possibility of or notification of a lawsuit for
malpractice or negligence or the possibility of a claim;
- if you
are contacted by an outside attorney or law enforcement officer
regarding a patient or care of a patient;
- if you are asked to be an
expert witness;
- if unusual incidents occur in the course of patient
care or contact;
- if contacted by the Medical Board of California.
Hours are Monday–Friday 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. After-hour coverage
is provided on an on-call basis by contacting the page operator.
This should be limited to the reporting of serious incidents that
need immediate evaluation and follow-up or other emergency type
situations requiring consultation with Risk Management.
