Child Care

childcare centers for children 2 months to 6 years of age. The
University Village Center includes a full-day kindergarten program.
Each classroom is staffed by 3 full-time Early Childhood Teachers
with Child Development Permits from the California Commission
on Teacher Credentialing. Many teachers are working on advanced
degrees.
Centers are open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through
Friday, and are closed for all University holidays and for the week
between the Christmas and New Year’s holiday. Information about
childcare services is available on the web at www.childcare.ucla.edu.
Eligibility: UCLA full-time students and UCLA-paid staff and faculty
are eligible. UCLA alumni, volunteers and UCLA Extension students
are not eligible.

Another option is the University Parents Nursery School, a parent

located in the University Village Childcare Complex. UPNS cares for
the children of UCLA students, faculty and staff but is not operated
by or affiliated with UCLA Early Care and Education. They offer
flexible schedules ranging from 2 half days to 5 full days for
children, and tuition varies from $235–$690/month. As a cooperative
school, UPNS is run by its members. As a part of their membership,
4
each family must co-op in the classroom twice per month and
participate in workshops. Call 310/397-2735 for more info or visit
their website at www.upns.net.
The Child Care Resource Program was established by UCLA Early
Care and Education to help UCLA families locate off-campus
child care on the west side of L.A. They maintain contacts with
family child care providers, center-based preschool programs,
elementary schools and summer programs. They are in contact
with approximately 200 day care homes, a small number of
in-home caregivers, and approximately 100 preschools and
extended care programs. They are familiar with local public and
private elementary schools, day camps and recreational programs
as well as resources for children with special needs. The Resource
Program offers comprehensive information to help parents evaluate
a particular provider or program. They do not make referrals or
recommendations. Most of these resources are located in West
Los Angeles, Westwood, Santa Monica, Culver City, Mar Vista and
Pacific Palisades.
UCLA parents can contact the Resource Program by attending
the “Choosing Child Care” Forum, held the first Monday of each
month at noon in the Student Activities Center, Suite B44 (formerly
known as the Men’s Gym — across from Ackerman Union). This is
a personalized service for UCLA parents. Coordinators describe the
range of resources available, how to evaluate a particular provider
or program, and suggest what questions will provide parents with
the information they need to make a childcare choice. Interested
parents may also call Judy Bencivengo, the Resource Coordinator, at
310/825-8474.
Connections For Children is a non-profit Child Care Resource and
Referral agency serving childcare providers, educators, and parents
in the West Los Angeles and South Bay communities. They offer
free referrals and financial assistance. They are located at 2701
Ocean Park Blvd., Suite 253, Santa Monica and are open from
8 am–5 p.m., until 7 pm on Wednesday. Phone: (310) 452-3325.
The UCLA Intervention Program was established more than 50 years
ago to serve the needs of children with developmental risks and
disabilities. It is a center-based program providing educational
and therapeutic services for children with special needs, ages 0–3
years. It is housed in the Developmental Studies Program of the
Department of Pediatrics at the UCLA School of Medicine.
The Intervention Program consists of the following components:
Infant Services (0–18 months)
Toddler Classes (18 months–3 years)
After School Program (2–5 years)
Polliwog Pool Play Program
Microcomputer Project
They are located at 1000 Veteran Avenue, Suite 23-10, Los Angeles.
