Course Description

This four-day intensive course in geriatric medicine emphasizes a functional assessment approach to comprehensive care of older adults and is directed toward health care professionals who care for older persons, and toward faculty in teaching programs in geriatrics and gerontology. The 2005 course will be especially useful to internists and family physicians who are preparing for either the Examination for the Certificate of Added Qualifications in Geriatric Medicine or the Re-certification Examination.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Identify the core principles of geriatric medicine;
  • Apply principles of geriatric assessment, geriatric pharmacology, rehabilitation, and long-term care to the patient care setting;
  • Understand key aspects of neurology, cardiology, psychiatry, urology, pharmacology, and rheumatology as they apply to older patients;
  • Identify psychosocial and ethical issues in decision-making, and formulate an approach to these problems;
  • Comprehend the major geriatric syndromes such as incontinence, pain management, osteoporosis, and swallowing disorders, and explain the appropriate geriatric medicine approaches to these syndromes; and
  • Be more effective teachers of geriatric medicine and geriatric pharmacology to other health professionals, as appropriate.

Highlights of the 2005 Course:

Geriatric Pharmacology - The California Geriatric Education Center will offer its Intensive Course in Geriatric Pharmacy and Board Review concurrently with the Geriatric Medicine course. Participants of the Geriatric Medicine course will have the opportunity to attend any of the geriatric pharmacology sessions. These sessions are accredited for physicians as well as pharmacists.

Lectures and Discussion – Over thirty presentations, each followed by floor discussion. All lectures are summarized in a 600-page syllabus provided to each course participant.

Interactive Sessions – Held each day with smaller groups of participants interacting with faculty on practical issues in geriatrics. Emphasis is on the “how to” of clinical procedures.

Board Review Sessions – Optional afternoon and evening board review sessions will be offered.

Welcome Reception – Early Wednesday evening, there will be a reception for course participants, their guests and faculty.

Board Review Sessions

We encourage candidates for the Certification and Re-certification Examination for Added Qualifications in Geriatric Medicine to purchase and study the Geriatric Review Syllabus (GRS) prior to the Intensive Course in Geriatric Medicine, and to use the GRS, as well as our syllabus, after the course. The GRS may be purchased directly from Blackwell Publishing. For full details and pricing information, please call 1-800-216-2522 or visit their website: www.blackwellscience.com

The American Geriatrics Society is pleased to announce the publication of Case Based Geriatrics Review: 500 Questions and Critiques from the GRS on CD Rom. Case-Based Geriatrics Review includes 500 newly revised and up-to-date multiple choice questions with answers and critiques from several GRS editions. For additional information and to place your order, please call 1-800-334-1429 x2529.

Disclaimer:
The examination in geriatrics is prepared by representatives of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Family Practice. Although the general areas of content have been announced, the questions on the examination are confidential and have NOT been made available to any organizations, societies, or schools preparing “Board Review Courses.”

Physicians considering taking such a course should realize that as a result of this confidentiality, the courses cannot be uniform and cannot purport to anticipate the examination's actual content.

Each physician should claim only those credits that he/she actually spent in the activity.

Disclosure

The FDA has issued a concept paper which classifies commercial support of scientific and education programs as promotional unless it can be affirmed that the program is "truly independent" and free of commercial influence. In addition to independence, the FDA requires that non-promotional, commercially supported education be objective, balanced, and scientifically rigorous. The policy further states that all potential conflicts of interest of the CME staff and faculty be fully disclosed to the program’s participants. We at UCLA fully endorse the letter and spirit of this concept.

In compliance with this policy, the program audience will have disclosed to them any potential conflict(s) of interest related to the contents of presentations made by all faculty participating in sponsored or jointly sponsored programs of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

American Medical Directors Association (AMDA)

This activity has been approved for a maximum of 30.75 credit hours in medical direction toward certification as a Certified Medical Director in Long Term Care Facility (AMDA CMD). The CMD program is administered by the American Medical Directors Certification Program. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit actually spent on the activity.

American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP)

This activity has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 36.5 credits by the American Academy of Family Physicians. This includes 35.75 Prescribed and 0.75 Elective credits. Because some sessions run concurrently, no more than a total of 36.5 credits may be reported.

AB 487

New California law, AB 487, mandates that physicians licensed in the state of California (except Radiologists and Pathologists) complete 12 hours of continuing medical education on pain management and the treatment of terminally ill and dying patients. This is a one-time requirement, which must be completed by December 31, 2006. This course offers up to 6 hours toward this requirement.
