OBJECTIVES

IDTU's responsibilities reflect a rich spectrum of instructional technology support, as described in the following objectives:

  • Provide design and development support to faculty
  • Develop interactive applications for web base, handheld or hybrid technologies
  • Teach students and faculty
  • Evaluate new technologies
  • Host the School of Medicine curriculum
  • Maintain and administer the School of Medicine web based curriculum
  • Evaluate and conduct research on projects developed at IDTU
  • Write grants and produce other scholarly work
IDTU OBJECTIVES

Providing design and development support to faculty
  • Consult with faculty in identifying problems with instructional delivery.
  • Assist faculty in conceptualizing, designing and developing instructional technology solutions to identified problems.
  • Foment consensus and collaboration among faculty involved in all projects.
  • Devise and participate in effective implementation strategies for the diffusion of interactive applications.
Developing interactive applications for web base, handheld or hybrid technologies
  • Produce digital media required for integration in interactive tools- e.g., audio, video, slides, photos, images.
  • Review all available commercial or web based products on the topic under consideration, including similar products developed by other institutions.
  • Identify the most efficient, cost effective and sustainable development platform for the creation of interactive tools.
  • Gain expertise in the identified platform if required.
  • Develop and evaluate a prototype based on the instructional design blueprint.
  • Incorporate feedback from faculty (and students), and deliver the final product.
Teaching students and faculty
  • Co-teach in the Medical Education Fellowship offered to all faculty interested in undergraduate or postgraduate training in medicine.
  • Teach faculty development workshops on creating effective assessments.
  • Offer electives on web based instruction/ANGEL course management system during Orientation.
  • Facilitate the CABS (Clinical Applications of Basic Sciences) course during incoming students orientation as well as during regular course offering.
Evaluating new technologies
  • Review forthcoming technologies which may be of interest to medical education, e.g., handheld technologies, simulators, next generation internet, authoring software for exams and cases, course management systems, audience response system.
  • Inform and train relevant faculty on new technologies.
  • Develop and extend these technologies for appropriate use at the School of Medicine.
Hosting and maintaining the School of Medicine web based curriculum
  • Host all web based medical school curriculum content on a designated IDTU server.
  • Install relevant server tools and applications for multimedia, database, handheld tools delivery, while maintaining technical integrity of all servers.
  • Maintain six servers used by IDTU for efficient, error free functioning.
  • Design and implement effective strategies for categorizing, disseminating and archiving web based curriculum.
  • Conceptualize and write policy statements for faculty, staff and designated users.
  • Maintain a stable, secure, and HIPAA compliant environment for educational transactions.
  • Implement measures preventing security breaches and other inappropriate uses.
  • Make regular backups of all curriculum materials.
  • Update lecture notes, schedules, calendars, announcements, web sites related to curricular resources.
  • Archive all curriculum materials on a regular basis.
  • Ensure transparent access to users of multiple applications.
Organizing and delivering Faculty Development activities
  • Organize symposia to allow faculty showcasing of projects and encourage networking.
  • Deliver training to faculty and staff on specialized applications, e.g., case authoring tools, ANGEL course management system
  • Provide one on one consultation in multimedia production, PowerPoint use, other software of interest to faculty.
Evaluating and research on instructional innovations developed at IDTU
  • Assist faculty in the design, implementation, analysis and reporting of evaluation studies.
  • Incorporate the results of the evaluation to enhance quality and efficiency of projects.
  • Design qualitative, quasi experimental or descriptive research studies in collaboration with faculty.
Writing grants and producing other scholarly work
  • Prepare grant applications to support the development and diffusion of instructional technology in the School of Medicine.
  • Participate in collaborative grants initiated by other medical schools.
  • Generate individual and collaborative research and evaluation studies.
  • Present the results of empirical work, evaluations and project development at professional fora.
